|

Click here to visit our gift shop.
The Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story is one of the most iconic and recognizable movie props of all time.  Replicas of the leg lamp have become prized “Major Awards” for fans everywhere.  A Christmas Story author, Jean Shepherd was inspired to create the leg lamp after seeing an illuminated Nehi Soda advertisement.  The design of the leg lamp for A Christmas Story is the work of production designer Reuben Freed.  Unsure of exactly what a leg lamp was or should look like Freed presented a couple sketches to Shepherd who said, “Yep, that’s it!”  Freed then produced three leg lamps for the movie and went through several shade styles before settling on the large golden bell shade with black fringe seen in the movie.  None of the three original leg lamps survived the production of the movie. All three props were broken on set during the filming.

Click here for more information on our Father’s Day Packages.
A bit of trivia about Ralphie’s Old Man:
The part of the Old Man was originally offered to Jack Nicholson, who reportedly was interested in playing the part. Director Bob Clark, however, lobbied hard for Darren McGavin. The producers, worried about Nicholson’s typically large salary requests, eventually approved McGavin.
Though the Old Man’s first name is never mentioned in the film. In the shooting script it is revealed to be Frank.

Ebay Giving Works Auction Raises $5250 for Wounded Warriors
|
Â
Â
Linda Campagna and husband Thomas Streib submitted the winning bid in a charity auction to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in A Christmas Story House.
Like young Ralphie Parker and his movie family, the couple and two of their daughters will eat a “Chinese turkey” dinner of Peking duck. They’ll unwrap gifts like a blue bowling ball and can of Simoniz, shoot BB guns in the back yard and have the chance to try on a pink bunny suit, just like the one Ralphie was forced to wear.
No one besides owner Brian Jones and a few friends has ever stayed in the house since he bought and renovated it, and no one ever at Christmas. Campagna and Streib got their chance to relive the movie by bidding $5,250 on eBay Giving Works, the charity listings site, to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project that provides direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members. . “It meant a lot to us,” Campagna said, because she and her husband are both former Army sergeants. “We went higher than we would have gone otherwise.”
They live in Stewartstown, Pa., work for Boeing in neighboring Maryland, and are - of course - longtime fans of “A Christmas Story.”
Until hearing about the auction on the radio, however, “we didn’t even realize there was a real house,” Campagna said. “My husband called and said, ‘Quick, go to eBay!’ ”
They topped 15 bidders to earn their first trip to Cleveland.
They will be flown from Baltimore to Cleveland as part of the package.
For More about the auction visit: http://www.achristmasstoryhouse.com/index.php/ebay-auction/
For more about eBay Giving Works visit:Â http://www.ebaygivingworks.com/ns/giftsthatmakeadifference.html

Tom Streib and Linda Campagna, right, and daughters Kari and Kate were the top bidders.

| A Christmas Story Gift Shop Opens in Canada |
The Canadian branch of A Christmas Story House Gift Shop is now open. We have expanded operations into Canada and opened an online branch of our gift shop based in Oakville, Ontario. The Web site for the Canadian branch is www.AChristmasStoryHouse.ca.
The movie was filmed in three locations - Toronto and St. Catharines, Ontario, and Cleveland, Ohio - so it’s only fitting that we be able to serve the customers in the communities that made film possible. We are happy to finally be able to meet the demand for leg lamps north of the border.
To lead the branch, A Christmas Story House has named Tyler Schwartz as director of Canadian operations. An Oakville-native, Schwartz is a true fan of the film. He has researched all of the film’s shooting locations and documented his two-year adventure in a 90-minute film called“Road Trip for Ralphie.” While filming this documentary, Schwartz struck up a friendship with A Christmas Story House owner, Brian Jones who later approached him about opening a Canadian location.
Schwartz’s“Road Trip for Ralphie” documentary will premiere at “A Christmas Story” 25th Anniversary Celebration & Convention, held Nov. 28-29 in Cleveland that will bring thousands of fans of the movie for two days of activities and events at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.
Other Canadian-related highlights at this year’s convention include:
· A reunion of actors from the movie, including Canadians Tedde Moore (Miss Shields), Zack Ward (Scut Farkus) and Dwayne McLean (Black Bart)
· Rides in the original fire truck used in the movie from Flick’s famous tongue-on-the-flagpole scene with proceeds benefiting the Chippawa Volunteer Fire Department of Niagara Falls, Ontario, which owns and maintains the fire truck
· The unveiling of newly acquired costumes from the film which have been in storage these past 25 years at a Toronto costume company
· The first public display of two Genie Awards won by “A Christmas Story” for Best Achievement in Direction and Best Screenplay on loan from the estate of Bob Clark, director of “A Christmas Story”

| Recent Fan Submissions |
We received a couple really nice fan submissions last week.Â
Jason Harris of Fairport Harbor, Ohio sent in this submission:
“This year I decided to dress up as the leg lamp for my works annual Halloween Costume Contest. I made the costume myself and I came in first place due to the creativity of the costume. I wore the costume around that night for trick or treat and ironically met Patty Lafontaine who played the elf in the movie. She loved the costume and also took pictures of me.”

| Ralphie makes his directorial debut with “Couples Retreat” |
Â
Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story and is fresh off his executvie producing role in the blockbuster Iron Man will make his first major directorial debut with a new big-screen comedy called Couples Retreat. Billingsley’s long-time friend and project collaborator, Jon Favreau wrote the script and will be starring with their other good friend, Vince Vaughn, who is the movie’s producer.  The movie also star Jason Bateman and Faizon Love. Since that “defining” role in 1983, Billingsley has gone on to produce most of Favreau’s films and work as a second-unit director. He is now making his directorial debut after directing a short titled The Sacred Fire from 1994.
Â
Couples Retreat follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play, but they all soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. The idea for the film was originally devised by Vince Vaughn before being handed off to Jon Favreau to script.  Production is expected to begin in late October in Bora Bora and Los Angeles.
Â
Billingsley has collaborated with Vaughn on “Four Christmases” and “The Break-Up,” and with Favreau on “Iron Man,” “Elf” and “Dinner for Five.” Billingsley also worked with both Favreau and Vaughn on their 2001 film “Made.”

| Dept 56 New Releases, Re-releases and Retired Pieces |
In addition to its exclusive pieces A Christmas Story House Gift Shop will carry this year’s new building and accessory. New for this year are Pulaski’s Candy Store and Ralphie Bunny Suit. Pulaski’s Candy Store is where Ralphie tells his parents that Flick saw some grizzley bears in an attempt to convince them he need a BB-gun for Christmas. The idea for adding Pulaski’s Candy Store to the line of Dept 56 buildings came from fans who suggested it to A Christmas Story House owner Brian Jones, who then passed it on to Dept 56. If there are buildings or accessories you would like to see in future years, just let us know and we will pass on along your requests.
Â
Also at the suggestion of fans, A Christmas Story House arranged for Dept 56 to re-release the Fire House and Fire Truck that were part of the inaugural line of A Christmas Story Dept 56 items released in 2005. These hard-to-find items will now be available to all, allowing everyone to finally complete their A Christmas Story Villages.
Â
A Christmas Story House also has acquired a limited number of the Chop Suey Palace and Singing Carolers. These items were both retired in 2006 and have become hard to find. These two items will be available in November.
Â
Â
|
| The Return of Black Bart |
Yes he’s back and he is not “pushing up daisies.” We are pleased to announce that actor and professional stunt man Dwayne McLean, better known to fans as Black Bart, will be joining the cast of characters at A Christmas Story 25th Anniversay Celebration & Convention this year. He’ll be part of the special speakers series that will explore the making of A Christmas Story and what really happened on the set during the making of the movie. The speakers series will be exclusive to Ralphie Pass holders only.
Â
After 4 years of consecutive conventions, A Christmas Story House & Museum is going to take a couple years break from hosting A Christmas Story Convention. This will be your last chance for a while to see the actors and revel in the all the events of the convention weekend. We have pulled out all the stops to make this year’s convention that much more memorable, including the premiere of two documentaries and rides in the original fire truck from the movie. Â

Special Displays During 25th Anniversary CelebrationÂ
|
Â
Two very special displays will be unveiled during the 25th Anniversary Celebration & Convention in Cleveland on Nov. 28 & 29. The first of which will be the 2 Genie Awards (Canadian equivalent of the Oscars) won in 1984 by A Christmas Story for Best Achievement in Direction and Best Screenplay. This will be the first time they have ever been on public display. The Genies will be on loan from director Bob Clark’s estate and will on be on display for this holiday season.
Â
The second display will be two sets of costumes. One will be of the costumes worn by Black Bart and his men. The other will be of “The Parker Family Christmas” displaying the costumes worn during Christmas morning. All costumes are the original screen worn costumes. They were discovered last year at Thunder Thighs Costumes by mega fan Tyler Schwartz and then acquired, along with numerous others, earlier this year by A Christmas Story House & Museum. Thought to have been lost to the ages, the discovery of the costumes 25 years after the making of the film is remarkable. Â
